Intimacy is a confession and acknowledgement of regret, produced during the disintegration of an intimate relationship. "One Thousand Ways to Lose" asks if we make conscious choices when falling in love or if, given the struggle to sustain a relationship, we are the play things of the Greeks' laughing gods. The early phase of a relationship is a "State of Grace" in which we manage to connect despite linguistic and geographical barriers. Inspired by the Danish philosopher Kierkegaard, who suggested that life can only be understood backwards, "Living in Reverse" summarizes my experience of failed relationships. The Fool at The Wedding Feast riffs on the idea of Jesus turning water into wine, while our desperate suitor seems only to be able to do the reverse -- turning yet another promising romance into an unhappy ending. The album ends with Mystery Dance, which gives up on understanding any of it. But I hope, as T.S. Elliot said in The Four Quartets: "... the end of our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time ... ."
Next to her sleeping body, sunshine smell on her skin
Dreamtime slips through her fingers, must this day begin?
Can we ever really comprehend that we never really choose
All the tender words evaporating with the rising sun
One thousand ways to lose
At the start of the story when brave hearts break ground
Where hope bows to beauty in a spell so profound
Can we ever really count the cost, can we ever pay our dues?
All attempts to understand are met with such bewilderment
One thousand ways to lose
I bow down to your memory, where do you sleep tonight?
Will you wake with a teardrop, are your dreams contrite?
Can we ever really bluff and blame, can we stand up and accuse?
All attempts to justify, protect ourselves lie after lie
One thousand ways to lose
I’ve been watching you carefully for a little while
And I’m starting to see how you’re pinned
I know your body and I know your mind
It reveals the extent we have sinned
When love’s really healing there’s a special place -- lovers occupy
Between the sheets between the eyes we sigh and cry and kiss goodbye
To testify to this state of grace
I’d got used to your back as you walked away
That familiar sense of despair
When the desperate need to be understood
Had beaten the bond that we shared
Now you’re back like you never went away
With a different look in your eye
I stand in the gaze of the gods of love
And declare our truth to the sky …
I feel like I’m drowning in a sea of regret
Won’t you throw me a lifeline, catch me in your net
I dived with the frogmen to the wreckage below
I was drawn by your riptide, by your fierce undertow, won’t you
Wake me with a kiss again in the soft morning light
Show me what I miss again in the night -- let's give up the fight
If I walked on the water for you, turned this other cheek
If I raised up Lazarus, bequeathed all to the meek
Would you give up your mission, your carefully laid plan?
Could you drop your ambition embrace this broken man?
Wake me with a kiss again …
To all who are lost at sea, where all hope has flown
Don’t fear the sirens song, she’ll sing you home
Alone in the twilight, one more sinking sun
Must the world turn so slowly when love’s on the run?
I offered a diamond, you offered your scorn
I’m condemned for your suffering and the child still unborn
Wake me with a kiss again …
I’m joining the resistance -- the broken and the poor
Who once so brave in battle, have finally lost the war
We’ve even tried surveillance in the houses of the poor
Where random acts of love break out behind the bedroom door
Here comes another love song from another bleeding heart
In my great coat and my black beret I really look the part
I’m joining the resistance they’ve sprung my heart from jail
I’m learning how to lie and cheat, I’m learning how to fail
When Jesus and his fishermen cast their nets onshore
We watched them turn the other cheek and then gave them what for
I snuck into Gethsemane on a silent night like this
I’d asked the boys to back me up and betrayed him with a kiss
I’m joining the resistance, I just need one more night
I got the call from Paris and I’m waiting for my flight
Don’t question my commitment, don’t make me feel a fool
I’ve tried to learn the book of love and broken every rule
I’ve tried to learn the book of love and broken every rule
Thunder heads form in the sky above me
The ocean starts to rumble and roll
‘Round my neck the Albatross keeps company
Day after my sails lose all control
Scales fall from my eyes like rain from a summer sky
I bless the beauty swimming all around me
The sea-wolf wails his lonesome song to testify
A spring of love connects his heart to the sea-wolf
Home again love -- home again
Will your arms be waiting for me?
Home again love, if the white dove
Guides me through this endless sea we’ll blessed be
We rounded the Cape of Good Hope with a good south wind
The glorious sun banished the fog and the mist
I cried out your name so loud that even the dolphins grinned
These salty lonely lips still long to be kissed
Home again love -- home again
Will your arms be waiting for me?
Home again love, if the white dove
Guides me through this endless sea we’ll blessed be
The bridegrooms doors are opened wide as the feast is set
The star in my bright sky has led me safe home
Home again love -- home again
Will your arms be waiting for me?
Home again love, if the white dove
Guides me through this endless sea we’ll blessed be
New ways to hide from the light, new ways to fight
New tears for old souvenirs, new words old spite
My old addiction, my closest friend
You kept the faith you were fighting to defend
Skin to skin -- when the words have lost all meaning
Skin to skin, no brave hero, no heroine
Up close -- beyond their strong defences
Hand to hand, eye to eye, heart to heart -- skin to skin
How quick snow turns to ice -- such pure sacrifice
Love sick -- hearts in a vice -- wastelands paradise
Our youth is spent, lets not pretend
Can we consent not offend or condescend
Skin to skin -- when the words have lost all meaning …
My old addiction, my closest friend
I’m drying out, have we finally reached the end?
Skin to skin -- when the words have lost all meaning …
After five long years in exile on an island cold and grey
Came a call from the land of freedom to return this castaway
He crossed the sea of treachery, cast off his disgrace
The prodigal returning to absolution's warm embrace
There’s a fool at every wedding and that time it was me
If they call a fool the best man he won’t feel like a refugee
I danced with every woman there, I looked for love in vain
I was drunk on liberty, I slipped my ball and chain
The fool at the wedding feast rolled eyes at the judge's daughter
Serene like a Pascal lamb headed for the slaughter
She danced with the holy fool who tried to reward her
The fool at the wedding feast turned wine into water
She took him down the mountain and washed him in the sea
He rushed into her temple, went down on his knee
She packed light the queen of the night, kissed his sleeping face
She left a key for the refugee, was it honour or disgrace?
The fool at the wedding feast rolled eyes at the judge's daughter…
He told an easy story of how he’d been betrayed
‘Til the boy inside the man returned and destroyed this masquerade
He knew that she was leaving, he felt the kiss of death
While the man was grieving the boy took his last breath
The fool at the wedding feast rolled eyes at the judge's daughter …
In the soft morning light where I knelt down to pray
It seemed like an angel had fallen that day
Her skin glowing gently the shine of her hair
Stretched out on the alter like an answer to prayer
But I held my breath as her veil dropped away
And my spirit rejoiced at her naked display
This Benediction this song in her name
This hymn to her and the reason she came -- this benediction
With arms outstretched ‘Don’t look!’ she softly cried
Risking Medusa he stripped this willing bride
And there on the bed between yielding thighs
Their spirits rejoiced with wild angelic cries
This benediction this song in her name
This hymn to her and the reason she came -- this benediction
Where are we now, how did we get here?
Breathless and blind in this atmosphere
Shadows combine, darkness is complete
A mask to define this invincible defeat
Our hopes and dreams didn’t plan for times like these
Stranded here, quite alone, falling to our knees
The mystery dance will take us where
Retreat and advance must end, my friend, my hope my despair
Abandon hope all who enter here
We fools rush in, so brave so clear
We think we learn, teach our fingers not to burn
The fire of desire, the compulsion to return
The mystery dance will take us where
Retreat and advance must end, my friend, my hope my despair
Finally we clear the floor, the music fades once more
Looking down the years, making sense of tear-stained travel
How did we get here, where our hopes and dreams unravel?
Tide and time move in one direction
To understand love we’d have to be living in reverse
How many times have I said I’m sorry, how many wasted years?
Letters become clues read backwards, then a plan appears
Moon and stars move in one direction
But to understand love we’d have to living in reverse
All our burdens bourne like blunders to reform
All our foolish hopes and plans
Learning how to fall and learning where to crawl
Life makes sense backwards like reading in Japan
